This smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) was photographed yesterday in a small mountain reservoir at an elevation over 5,600 feet. Due to their preference for cooler water than largemouth bass, smallmouths have adapted well to middle and high elevation lakes throughout their introduced range. Adult smallmouth also tend to be less piscivorous than largemouths, instead relying more on insects for their primary food source than other fish. An adult smallmouth grows to be half the size of an adult largemouth, yet many anglers prefer catching smallmouths due to their fighting characteristics.
