Life on the bottom

cottus-asper

The large head and mouth of this prickly sculpin (Cottus asper) make it well suited for preying on macroinvertebrates, crayfish, and smaller fishes. Lacking a swim bladder and denser than water, prickly sculpin are adapted for life on the bottom. See more on prickly sculpin in our Fish Camo post.
