New monitoring system considered for Pacific fisheries

Better monitoring of Pacific fisheries is a focus for regional department heads from 27 countries meeting in New Caledonia this week.

Speaking at the opening of the 10th SPC Heads of Fisheries meeting its Director General Colin Tukuitonga said Pacific people are custodians of about a quarter of the world’s ocean resources – including the world’s biggest tuna fishery.

The meeting is also focusing on improving collection and analysis of coastal fisheries data and to discuss and approve a harmonized data collection framework for the development of evidence based management measures for coastal fish.
