Industry-funded study tracks fishing in polluted Portland Harbor

About 7,800 people eat contaminated resident fish such as bass and catfish caught in polluted Portland Harbor each year, a new study paid for by three harbor industries estimates.

And roughly 4,800 consume the fish at or above levels recommended by state health officials, said David Sunding,co-author of The Brattle Group study.

For the first time in 11 years, the Environmental Protection Agency has declared a key group of Portland Harbor property owners out of compliance with the harbor’s cleanup consent order.

The dispute raises tensions in the already high-stakes debate over health risks to people who eat harbor fish and shellfish.
