FISHBIO biologists evaluate salmon redds in West Coast rivers to better understand the spawning habitat preferences of salmon. Spawning locations chosen by Chinook can show considerable variability in physical characteristics between river basins. Therefore, it is essential to evaluate water depth, water velocity, substrate size and redd size to characterize the available spawning habitat within a watershed. By using site-specific information on the preferred spawning conditions, steps can be taken to protect existing conditions, or to increase the quantity and quality of available spawning beds. To read more on redd surveys see our recent post Hunt for Redds in October.
