While out conducting an annual snorkel survey in a Central Valley river this past summer, we happened upon what resembled a large pterodactyl nest (maybe not) suspended 20 feet high in a tree hanging over the river. Although it would be cool to have discovered the first existing pterodactyl nest, this collection of debris was actually caused by the high river flows experienced last spring. Periodic high flow events are good for river ecosystems, and they can significantly change the channel and adjacent habitat. High flow events help maintain gravel mobility by flushing out built up fine sediment, nourish riparian vegetation and generally improve fish habitat.
