Sea Anemone west coast
Many people associate sea anemones with tropical reefs, but in fact there are over 1,000 species occupying various depths of all the world’s oceans. We found this Starburst anemone (Anthopleura sola) off the coast of California while looking for rockfish.
The Starburst Anemone is a solitary species found attached to rocks and concrete pilings in in low tidal zones from Alaska to Panama. They can grow to nearly 10 inches (25 cm) wide and feed on mussels, sea urchins and small fish.
