In recent years, St. Patrick’s Day wasn’t they only time for seeing green in California’s Central Valley – huge mats of invasive water hyacinth clogged many of the state’s waterways year round, turning rivers into tunnels of green. Today’s Film Friday shows this green menace on the move in the Tuolumne River three years ago. While drought conditions were a boon for invasive hyacinth to spread, this year’s storms have flushed much of this problematic plant out of the rivers, creating an opportunity for controlling its advance.
