woolly bear caterpillar
Just in time for Halloween, today’s photo Friday is a close-up of a woolly bear caterpillar. Easily identified by their distinctive orange and black-bands, woolly bears are the larval form of the Isabella tiger moth (Pyrrharctia isabella). According to folklore, these bugs can be used to predict the weather – the shorter their orange mid section, the more severe the coming winter is supposed to be. If there’s any truth to that, this caterpillar would be a harbinger of a cold one to come!
