Photo Friday: Spotlight on the Sierra Newt

Sierra Newt

When nature is your photography studio, you never know what species of wildlife might become your next photo subject. We recently snapped this photo of a Sierra Newt while conducting snorkel surveys on Big Chico Creek. The spotlight effect of the natural lighting helped garner this picture our staff Photo of the Month award. Sierra newts are unusual in that they carry the same toxin as pufferfish, making them unpalatable to predators, and can also form threesomes while mating. They might be hard for us to spot, but when mating they certainly aren’t shy!
