Description:

INHS is seeking field technicians (1-3) to conduct applied research in aquatic ecology and large river systems throughout the state of Illinois, focusing on the Mississippi River. Technicians will assist large river ecologists in the collection of standardized long-term river monitoring data with additional targeted data collection and lab sample processing. This position will be 40 hours per week and will be based in Macomb, Illinois.

Responsibilities:

Assist in the collection of standardized long-term river monitoring data

Conduct targeted data collection and lab sample processing

Participate in native and invasive fish monitoring, netting, and other sampling methods

Perform field, laboratory, and station maintenance duties as needed

Operate and maintain large boats, outboard motors, trailers, and field equipment

Record data meticulously and ensure safety protocols are followed

Qualifications:

Working towards a bachelor’s degree in aquatic ecology, biology, zoology, or a related field

Demonstrate knowledge and ability to collect biological data such as fisheries and water quality in large river systems

Preferably experienced with standardized long-term monitoring sampling protocols

Experience with large boats, outboard motors, trailers, four-wheel drive vehicles, and field equipment maintenance preferred

Significant physical exertion required (including carrying 50 or more pounds of gear)

Valid driver’s license and strong swimming ability

Ability to work in extreme weather conditions, long days, occasional nights, and weekends

Salary: $15 – $17 per hour (DOE)
