Description: 

This position is located at the hatchery 45 miles North of Spokane and there may be bunkhouse accommodations through the Newport Ranger Station which is approximately 25 minutes from the hatchery.

The NSCF Intern position will assist and learn entry level biological data collection and animal husbandry skills while working on a conservation based native fishery restoration project supporting Boundary Dam FERC licensing obligations. 

The intern will work under the direction of the Hatchery Supervisor, Operator and Technician in daily hatchery operations to ensure that all fish health and production needs are met. This person will assist in performing professional, technical and scientific fish culture duties and perform routine hatchery related maintenance. 

This position will assist SCL field staff with various environmental surveys that include but are not limited to: Snorkeling surveys, water temperature monitoring, nighttime boat-based electrofishing surveys, daytime backpack electrofishing surveys, remote telemetry station maintenance and telemetry mobile surveys. 

This is a summer internship.

    Responsibilities:

    • Netting and handling fish on foot in streams and via boat in reservoirs
    • Operating a backpack electrofishing unit
    • Handling, measuring and tagging captured fish
    • Recording data
    • Hiking in rough terrain
    • Downloading instrument data
    • Manually entering data
    • Enumerate fish

    Qualifications:

    • Education: Enrolled in an accredited certificate, 2-year or 4-year undergraduate educational program during their internship. 
    • Preferred Areas of Study:  Enrolled in an academic program with focus on fisheries, fish ecology, fish physiology, aquaculture, natural resources, biology, zoology or a related field. 
    • Undergraduate students will need to maintain a 2.0 GPA or above throughout the internship.
    • Driving: You must hold a current valid state issued driver’s license from any US state to be verified prior to start date. Out of state license holders will be required to obtain a WA state license within 30 days of hire.
