Description:

The MBI office is seeking a full-time fish crew leader to organize river and stream surveys in multiple states throughout Midwest and Eastern U.S.

During field season, leads a 3-person field crew that collects fish and habitat data in wadeable streams and non-wadeable rivers. Responsible for following required methods and quality assurance practices per project specifications. Operates electrofishing equipment, 4WD trucks, boats and outboard motors. Independently carries out detailed plans of study, supervises crew members, ensures proper safety practices and care and maintenance of all sampling gear and vehicles. Responsible for collection and custody of data, including data sheets and ancillary forms. Must be able to accurately maintain records and expense documents. Crews frequently travel together over extended periods of time including consecutive weeks and weekends. During the off-season, manages data and assists with report writing. Employment with MBI is “at will”.

Responsibilities:

Work independently, effectively supervise field personnel, and maintain a positive team environment. Ensure safe practices. Identify fish to species level in each survey area and locale. Carry out all sampling and data collection in accordance with specified methods and a detailed study plan. Have knowledge and/or experience about rivers and streams, boating, canoeing, navigation, and water safety in general. Maintain a variable work schedule, including irregular hours and extended overnight travel and weekends during field season. Safely operate electrofishing equipment, 4WD trucks, boats, and outboard motors, oversee equipment care and the proper handling and use, including water quality equipment. Organize and complete multiple and varied work tasks within specified timeframes.

Qualifications:

Ohio Level 3 Qualified Data Collector for Fish Community Biology and Habitat status is preferred, or pursuit of this certification is expected in the first year of employment. Possess strong data analysis and report writing skills. Possess a Bachelor’s Degree or higher in a related field. Have in-field sampling experience. Valid driver’s license, good driving record and proof of auto insurance.

Salary: $19.00-21.00/hr DOE. Higher pay available with Level 3 QDC status.

Start Date: Spring, 2023 (Flexible).
