The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is seeking a Fish and Wildlife Biologist 3 to join the Aquatic Invasive Species Division in Olympia, Thurston County. This senior-level biologist will handle statewide ballast water and biofouling issues, working under the general direction of policy and leadership staff. The role involves planning, developing, and designing biological studies, research, resource assessments, and preparing reports that impact key decisions.


Develop and implement commercial vessel compliance strategies, including data management, vessel inspection, and compliance processes.

Coordinate with vessel inspectors on compliance investigations and biofouling management strategies.

Develop and implement biofouling prevention measures and regulatory structures.

Supervise data management staff, ensuring data collection integrity and quality control.

Compile, analyze, and interpret data, preparing quarterly and annual reports.

Coordinate biological testing for compliance with ballast water discharge and treatment standards.

Secure funding through budget requests, grants, and proposals.

Supervise and mentor technical and professional staff, ensuring team effectiveness and performance.

Develop performance measures and standards, monitor work progress, and conduct employee evaluations.


Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science.

Three (3) years of professional experience in fish/wildlife/habitat management or research, with at least one (1) year in:

Commercial shipping regulatory and management operations or related fields.

Marine or freshwater aquatic invasive species risk assessment and management.

A Master’s degree in applicable science may substitute for one year of required experience; a Ph.D. may substitute for two years.

Salary: $5,088.00 – $6,838.00 Monthly
