Description: FISHBIO, a fisheries research and monitoring firm, is seeking a Fisheries Biologist to join our staff in Oakdale, CA. We operate long-term monitoring programs on several rivers in the Central Valley, conduct habitat restoration projects, and carry out a number of fisheries studies designed to answer particular questions related to fisheries management and population recovery of salmonids. Aspects of these programs include the operation of rotary screw traps, wire fyke traps, fish passage weirs, redd- and snorkel surveys, marking and/or tagging of fish, and electrofishing surveys.

Responsibilities:

Tasks include, but are not limited to: field data collection, data analysis, report writing, study design, development of manuscripts and proposals, assistance with regulatory document preparation, technical support for various projects, and project design and management.

Requirements/Basic Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in fisheries biology, aquatic biology/ecology, environmental engineering, or closely related field; or possess five or more years of experience in a related field. The right candidate will have knowledge of anadromous fish, resident salmonids, fish passage, endangered species consultation, habitat assessment, or fish management strategies and water resources.

Experience and physical ability to collect field data (e.g., fisheries monitoring, water quality, surveying, hydraulics/hydrology) are required: must be in good health, able to lift 50 lbs., and be a good swimmer. Excellent communication abilities that include technical writing skills, one-on-one discussions, and group presentations are a must.

Desired Qualifications: Knowledge of California rivers and the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, as well as California native and non-native fish species. Should have strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Access, and ideally statistical software such as R.

Strong, demonstrated experience with advanced data analyses, modeling, mark-recapture techniques, predator-prey dynamics, population dynamics, and/or life history of anadromous and resident salmonids.

Strong candidates will be detail-oriented, creative at problem-solving, resourceful, self-motivated, and comfortable in a fast-paced and rapidly changing work environment. Experience in statistics or regulatory policy is desired.

Salary: $54k-$75k (DOE)
