Tuesday July 19, 2022

The Department is seeking two temporary fisheries technicians assisting on the Lake Pend Oreille Fishery Recovery Project. The primary focus of these positions is to collect biological data from a Lake Trout targeted suppression program while handling multiple species as bycatch (including Bull Trout) and returning these species to the lake. Over half the time will be spent on a commercial gill netting boat with some days in the office entering data and processing samples.

Incumbents must be able to work a variable schedule under adverse weather conditions, lift and carry/pack up to 50 lbs. This is a full time (40 hours/week) non-benefited position. The position may require work outside of a typical 9-5 work schedule. Weekend and some holiday work may be required. Housing maybe available, but is not guaranteed. This position runs from September – December 2022 with potential to rehire from January – May 2023.

Incumbents will work as part of a research team including commercial gill netting crews and other IDFG biologists and technicians. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: assisting in gill netting efforts for Lake Trout suppression, sample processing and data entry, and preparing otoliths for age and growth analyses. This is a highly collaborative research project and incumbents may be given opportunities to work on other projects related to the Lake Pend Oreille Fishery Recovery Program.

Demonstrated ability to handle responsibility and work independently. Course work in a Natural Resource/Biological Science is strongly preferred, but not mandatory. Preference will be given to applicants who have a Bachelor’s Degree in Fisheries, Biology, or a related field, or are currently enrolled in a bachelors program in one of these fields. Experience handling fish, and some knowledge of fish anatomy, morphology, and physiology as well as age and growth analyses is preferred.
