Khmer Times —
Wonders of Mekong said that the Mekong River Basin is a sanctuary for many rare and interesting species, with the hairy-nosed otter being the latest endangered species found in the floodplains.
In its report, released on June 29, Wonders of Mekong said that the floodplain is a sanctuary for the hairy-nosed otter (scientific name Lutra Sumatrana).
Unlike most mammals, which have smooth, moist noses, their noses are covered with mustache-like long hair. The otter also used to be common across South East Asia, but are now only found in some places in Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia and Sumatra. In Cambodia, the mammals were identified around the floodplains of the Tonle Sap.
