A narrow band of the southwest Washington coast will close Wednesday evening to all salmon angling and fishing for hatchery coho salmon will close next Tuesday evening along most of the Oregon coast.
State and federal managers announced the pending coho closure Wednesday morning after determining nearly 80 percent of a pre-season quota for the area from Cape Falcon (near Manzanita) to the California border had been caught as of Sunday evening.
They said it’s likely the entire quota of 47,600 would be exceeded before the previously announced Aug. 23 closure.
Anglers can continue to fish for chinook salmon without hatchery-only restrictions under the two-fish daily bag limit south of Cape Falcon.
Agencies will review catches after the closure to see if additional fishing can occur before an any-coho season reopens Sept. 1 from Cape Falcon to Humbug Mountain (near Port Orford).
South of Humbug Mountain, all coho fishing will cease Tuesday evening through the end of the year.
The agencies also added a geographic restriction effective at midnight Wednesday for all salmon within three miles of the Washington coast between the mid-mouth of the Columbia River north to Leadbetter Point (on the north tip of Long Beach Peninsula).
