Hunt for redds in October

Fall redd survey

Hunting redds is more of a science than an art. A ‘redd’ is a gravel nest composed of pockets of eggs that are deposited and buried by the female salmon. Using standardized methods with well-trained biologists is essential to identifying and locating Chinook salmon redds. The number, distribution, and density of redds, as well, as the timing of spawning can be ascertained from these surveys. Fall-run Chinook salmon spawning typically peaks in mid to late November in Central Valley rivers.
