In today’s Film Friday, FISHBIO Fisheries Biologist, Jack Eschenroeder, walks us through how the newly installed custom fish trapping weir on the Carmel River works. This portable resistance weir is being used to count individual adult fish migrating upstream during the spawning season on the Carmel River in California. Portable resistance weirs such as this one are an effective way to monitor fish populations without installing a permanent one. At the beginning of each season, the weir is installed and then removed once the season is over. At FISHBIO, our fabrication shop allows our team to customize a weir to fit any river, including this one!
