The Fisheries Administration has announced that the government will temporarily close commercial freshwater fishing in designated areas from June 1 to October 30 this year, but subsistence fishing is permitted.
The main purpose of closing the freshwater fishing season is to protect species and allow spawning and fish to grow and create a balance between conservation and commercial production, which is key to sustainability.
According to the administration’s announcement yesterday, the closing of the fishing season will occur at different locations.
The administration said that from June 1 to September 30, fishing will be banned in freshwater fishing areas in Kampong Chhnang, Pursat, Battambang, Pailin, Banteay Meanchey, Siem Reap, Oddar Meanchey, Preah Vihear, Ratanakiri, Mondulkiri, Kratie, Tboung Khmum, Kampong Cham, Kampong Thom provinces, and parts of Phnom Penh and Kandal province in locations north of the confluence of the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers.
