KTLA

A large sewage spill prompted the closure of ocean waters near Salt Creek Beach in Dana Point Tuesday.

Approximately 3,375 gallons of sewage were spilled into the ocean due to a breakage in a main lift station sewer line, according to the OC Health Care Agency.

The spill forced the closure of the open coastal area spanning 1,500 feet upcoast to 1,500 feet downcoast of the Salt Creek.

The ruptured sewer line has since been repaired, but the closure will remain in effect out of caution, health officials said.

Visitors will not be allowed to swim, surf or dive into the affected waters during this time.
