If you drive along the Interstate Bridge between Portland and Vancouver, you might notice a change this week as crews will be removing the homeless camp on Hayden Island, just west of the bridge.

The Oregon Department of State Lands issued a ban on overnight camping on Monday. Tents and fires are no longer allowed between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.

A spokeswoman told KATU the restrictions are to protect against damage to property, natural resources, and the environment.

But just twenty feet offshore, there’s a problem they can’t solve.

We first told you about the two abandoned military ships in the Columbia River in 2020. At the time, the Alert and Sakarissa were still afloat but deteriorating quickly.
