Uncertainty surrounds how scientific research can proceed for Alaska pollock, groundfish and other species managed by NOAA.
There is growing uncertainty regarding how the agency will proceed with its management of Alaska’s pollock and other federally managed fisheries, following Trump officials’ threats to downsize the agency.
Several US mainstream media outlets and global news sites reported Tuesday that Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, visited NOAA and has been combing through NOAA data and threatening staffers with job cuts and layoffs.
“Things are happening really fast,” one NOAA fisheries scientist familiar with the Alaska pollock total allowable catch discussions told IntraFish on Wednesday. The source said they have been asked to resign from their role and “not to communicate anything with any foreign entity.”
