European marine researchers are calling for an urgent improvement and standardization of ocean monitoring. The call is also addressed to the international community, which gathers in Baku starting today (Nov. 11) for the UN Climate Change Conference COP29.
To preserve the ocean as a partner in the fight against climate change, it is imperative that its state is comprehensively monitored. This is the message of two reports that describe the main gaps and challenges in Europe, but also outline solutions to improve monitoring and protection of the oceans.
The papers, published in Frontiers in Marine Science, are a result of the EU project EuroSea, coordinated by the GEOMAR Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research Kiel, Germany.
A healthy ocean is fundamental to much of what makes up our lives. It provides us with oxygen and food, provides habitats for countless species, and acts as a buffer against climate change by absorbing large amounts of CO2 and excess heat.
