Central Oregon Daily News —
A deep sea fish that has only been documented 31 times in history was found washed up near Cannon Beach recently.
Seaside Aquarium shared photos of the Pacific football fish (Himantoliphus sagamius).
The aquarium said the fish normally lives in complete darkness at 2,000 -3,300 feet below the surface, so its rarely ever seen. The 31 recorded encounters have happened in New Zealand, Japan, Russia, Hawaii, Ecuador, Chile, and California. The aquarium said this is the first known Oregon sighting.
Seaside Aquarium said that like other angler fish, this one uses light that shines from a phosphorescent bulb on its forehead to attract prey.
