A baby Mekong dolphin was spotted yesterday at Kampi pool located in Sambok commune, Chetr Borei district, Kratie province.

The dolphin calf was seen by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF)-Cambodia research team in Kratie province, together with Kratie provincial Fisheries Administration officials.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, said yesterday that the one-metre-long dolphin was born on February 27 or 28, and weighs around nine kilogrammes.

The birth of a new baby dolphin coincides with the issuance of the new sub-decree to protect the Mekong Dolphin in Kratie and Stung Treng provinces.

Seng Teak, World Wildlife Fund (WWF)-Cambodia country director, said yesterday that this was exciting news and extended a  warm welcome to the first newborn dolphin this  year.
