On Wednesday, the weather on the Monterey Bay shore was sunny and warm, which made it a perfect day for many to head to the beach to enjoy the water.

“It’s warm. It’s wonderful, great weather, great August weather for us,” said Tom Hubbard, a beachgoer.

But for marine life experts, warmer waters can indicate a bigger impact on our oceans and ecosystems.

“With warmer waters, you get increased storm frequency. You get changes in species distribution, ” said Elliot Hazen, a research Ecologist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Hazen said a possible sign that warmer waters affect our oceans is that marine animals move to colder waters. One example is that sea lions are approaching the Monterey Bay shore.
