A giant Mekong catfish weighing 75 kilogrammes was released back into the river after being caught by a local fisherman in Kampong Chhnang province on Friday.

The rare species was caught by Fa Ly, a fisherman from Ampil Toek commune in Kampong Chhnang’s Kampong Tralach district, who alerted the authorities.

A releasing ceremony was held on Friday and Ly La, Director of Fisheries Administration of Kampong Chhnang Provincial Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, said Ly caught the giant catfish that weighed 75 kilogrammes and is 1.6 metres long and handed it over to fisheries officials who documented it and released into the Tonle Sap River.

The department appreciated Ly for handing over the fish, as it helps in the protection and conservation of the endangered species, he added.
