It may not look like much to passersby, but Parrott Creek in Canby is an important habitat for steelhead trout. Vital waterways like Parrott Creek and many others are marked out in a newly updated map from the Oregon Department of State Lands.

“We’re going to go down down into an area where Parrott Creek comes together with this little unnamed tributary that runs through the property,” said Ali Ryan Hansen, communications director for the Department of State Lands.

Hansen led a crew from KGW’s The Story through the trails and along the waterways on her family’s land, which they preserve as a natural habitat for both bees and fish.

“This is the part that’s going to be a little splishy, which is a very technical term,” Hansen said. “My family has done quite a bit of work to protect the health of these streams to do things that would encourage the fish to make homes here.”
