CHICO — Rain-soaked volunteers waded into Chico’s creeks Saturday and came out with 12 cubic feet of recyclable material and enough trash to fill two 40-yard Dumpsters.

The Butte Environmental Council’s Bidwell Park and Chico Creek Cleanup didn’t have as many people show up as in previous years, but event organizers said the people who braved the weather pulled about the same amount of trash out of the waterways as volunteers in the past.

A volunteer team from FishBio worked the banks of Little Chico Creek, piling up discarded beds, clothes and trash, then pulling it up onto the Nord Avenue bridge that crossed the creek.

Steve Zipper and Doug Demko collected the items in the creek bed while Andrew Bosse, Matt Peterson and Chanel Miyama pulled a refrigerator and buckets full of trash up.

“If they think that’s heavy, they should be down here,” Demko said as he and Zipper dragged a rain-soaked mattress across the mud.
