The River Ocean Cleanup (ROC) started collecting garbage in the water and along the riverbanks of the Tonle Bassac, Mekong River, and Tonle Sap yesterday in preparation for the upcoming Water Festival in Phnom Penh to keep the water and environment clean.

Nou Sovann, Executive Director of River Ocean Cleanup, said yesterday that ROC is ready to cooperate with the Phnom Penh governor and Environment Department of Phnom Penh and other volunteer youths to remove garbage from the water and riverside leading up to and during the three-day event.

Sovann added that the festival is an occasion when many people from the provinces visit Phnom Penh to see the boat races and the last thing people want to see is a river full of garbage.

He added that before and during the festival he will lead over a hundred volunteer youths and officials to collect the garbage to maintain a clean environment and ensure that there is no rubbish in the water or on the ground.
