The Wonders of the Mekong (WM) confirmed that in 2023 they were delighted with the release of thirteen critically endangered Mekong giant catfish into the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers.
Chea Seila, Wonders of the Mekong project manager, said yesterday that this extraordinary effort surpasses releases from previous years, showcasing the commitment of the Cambodian people, the Inland Fisheries Research and Development Institute of Cambodia, and the Fisheries Administration to conserve this remarkable species.
The giant catfish are accidently caught by fishermen in Kampong Cham, Tboung Khmum, Kandal provinces and in Phnom Penh are often given to WM to record and release them back into the river, she added.
“The local fishermen are aware of the need to protect the giant catfish by getting information through social media,” Seila said.
