This week, our staff attended the 3rd Steelhead Summit hosted by the Salmonid Restoration Federation in Ventura, California. As one of the conference activities, we toured a series of streams in the Santa Monica Mountains to learn about successes and challenges to long-term monitoring and restoration. The tour included a stop at Arroyo Sequit Creek, which was seriously burned just a few weeks ago during the Woolsey Fire in Malibu. It was a stark reminder of the threats that extreme events pose to salmonids, humans, and the environment alike. The tour also included bright spots like the restored Malibu Lagoon shown below, which in turn served as a reminder that success can be achieved given patience, persistence, and resilience.
