Molecular tools to detect species and unlock fish life-history
Thanks to advancements in technology, samples of water can be analyzed to detect fishes based on traces of genetic material left in the environment. Tissue samples from captured specimens, in contrast, can be analyzed to understand individual life-history expression and population characteristics. FISHBIO regularly collects such samples that can be used as part of molecular analysis.
Environmental DNA
We collect and filter samples that can be analyzed to detect traces of genetic material shed by aquatic animals.
Species Identification
We collaborate with project partners to genetically identify fish samples that are otherwise unrecognizable, or provide genetic validation of species identifications.
Population Genetics
We partner with molecular laboratories that process fish tissue samples to analyze genetic variation within and among populations.
