Following Fish with Tagging and Tracking Technology
FISHBIO uses tagging and tracking technologies to monitor the hidden movement, behavior, and survival of fishes, whether at local infrastructure sites or across landscapes. We have implemented large- and small-scale projects using PIT tag, acoustic, and radio telemetry, and can fabricate customized PIT antennas to meet project needs. FISHBIO has implanted thousands of PIT tags in fishes throughout California’s Central Valley and Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, and coordinates a multi-project PIT tag database.
Acoustic Tags
Tags that transmit sound signals from fish to listening hydrophones or receivers can be used to document fish movement, behavior, and survival.
PIT Tags
Cost-effective and easy to deploy, Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tags give tagged fish a unique identification code that is detected by antennas or handheld scanners.
Custom PIT Antennas
FISHBIO constructs customized PIT tag antennas using both full and half-duplex technology for unique and challenging settings, including large rivers, diversion tunnels, weirs, and fyke traps.
