Although white sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) are native to the San Joaquin Basin, it’s uncommon to see them in shallow water habitat, and rare to have the opportunity to obtain underwater video of the occurrence. Our run-in with this sturgeon coincided with the spawning migration timing of both white and green sturgeon. Adult sturgeon (≥15 years old) typically migrate into fresh water beginning in late February, and spawning typically occurs from March to July, with peak activity between April-June.
