rainbow-trout-rosy-cheeks
This fish exhibits conspicuous rosy cheeks characteristic of adult rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss); but color like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. Rainbow trout have complex color vision, and unlike humans, are able to see in the UV spectrum. Interpretation of color is very complex because not only does it depend on the reflectance spectrum, but also ambient light and the transmission properties of air and water (Beaudet 1998). We know from our experience in Underwater Photography that colors are affected by conditions such as time of day, weather, season, and water clarity. It is difficult to ascertain whether these rosy cheeks appear so rosy to rainbow trout.
