After a monthlong closure over public health concerns, the recreational razor clam fishery in Del Norte County has reopened after state health officials determined domoic acid levels no longer pose a significant risk to people who eat the clams.
California Department of Fish and Wildlife Director Meghan Hertel reopened the fishery following updated sampling results. The fishery had been closed since July 31 after elevated levels of domoic acid were detected.
Razor clams sampled at Crescent Beach in July and August 2026 all showed domoic acid concentrations below the federal action level, clearing the way for the fishery to reopen.
“I believe those samples came from July 28th and August 11th and showed that razor clams had fallen. Their domoic acid levels had fallen below the action level of 20 parts per million. And so that initiated the health agencies to recommend to our Department of Fish and Wildlife Director Megan Hurdle to open the fishery after one month of closure,” said CDFW Senior Environmental Scientist Specialist Christy Juhasz.
