Chinook salmon are showing encouraging signs of life in the Eel River, and a new count has conservation groups cautiously optimistic.

According to Friends of the Eel River, a total of 1,324 Chinook salmon were recently observed at Cape Horn Dam. It is the highest number recorded at that site since 2013. While the total remains well below historic levels, the increase stands out in a watershed that has faced decades of altered river flows and habitat disruption.
