Governor Newsom today announced $44 million for 15 projects across the Golden State that support tribal stewardship, salmon recovery and desert protection, creating a gateway for protecting biodiversity and expanding access to nature for all Californians.
In partnership with the Legislature, these investments further advance the Governor’s goal of conserving 30% of California’s lands and coastal waters by 2030, globally known as the 30×30 initiative. This includes a core commitment to strengthen tribal partnerships, recognizing tribes as original stewards of California lands and waters.
“Tribal communities across the state emphasize the long-held understanding that it is only through care of this place — the lands, waters, plants and beings — that our communities can thrive in return,” said Tribal Affairs Secretary Christina Snider-Ashtari. “Whether it is restoring Native practices to the lands, improving salmon runs and safeguarding eel populations, or expanding protections for desert wildlife, these awards represent Californians’ shared commitment to stewarding the abundant biodiversity of the place we all call home.”
