The Department of Fisheries and Oceans is planning a major $49-million rebuild of the Capilano River Hatchery.

The 1971 facility in Capilano River Regional Park releases about 1.5 million coho, chinook and pink salmon per year and draws in more than 200,000 visitors annually. But if the hatchery is going to continue its mission of the protection and restoration of Pacific salmon, the 55-year-old complex on the river must be modernized, according to DFO.
