Belem, State of Para, Brazil, January 19, 2026 — Research carried out at the Federal University of Pará reports progress in using genetic sequencing to safeguard Amazonian biodiversity. The study centers on pirarucu, a threatened freshwater fish, and links scientific data to conservation, lawful trade, and food security.

Research teams at the Federal University of Pará have completed a genetic sequencing project aimed at reducing pressure on wild fish populations. The work began with pirarucu, a species exceeding 100 kilograms and listed under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. Sequencing data supports breeding in captivity and confirms the origin of fish sold in domestic and export markets.
