Goldfish released into lakes can rapidly disrupt freshwater ecosystems, according to a community announcement from the University of Missouri.
A new study by the University of Missouri and the University of Toledo, published in the Journal of Animal Ecology, found that goldfish can trigger ecological collapse by clouding water, consuming prey and outcompeting native species.
Goldfish can cause rapid ecological collapse
The research team conducted large, controlled outdoor experiments using small, artificial lakes to simulate real-world conditions. They introduced goldfish into ecosystems representing both nutrient-poor and nutrient-rich waters and monitored the ecological consequences over time, according to the announcement.
The results were stark. Water quality declined rapidly as goldfish churned up bottom sediments, increasing suspended particles and signaling a fundamental shift in the ecosystem.
