The global population has reached approximately 8.3 billion, yet millions continue to struggle with food insecurity. As these concerns escalate, scientists are exploring new avenues beyond traditional agricultural land for sustainable food solutions. Recent research from a team at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) in Panama proposes that the ocean, and specifically coral reefs, may hold significant promise for enhancing global seafood production.

The study reveals a concerning trend: many reef fish populations have been severely overfished and are currently underperforming relative to their potential sustainable yields. By allowing these populations to rebuild, researchers argue that coral reefs can contribute substantially to global efforts to alleviate hunger.
