California-based Shinkei Systems, the seafood‑technology startup behind Seremoni Fish, is expanding into wild Alaska sockeye salmon, bringing its new technology to fishermen in Alaska’s Cook Inlet.
The company said Wednesday it has developed a new harvesting robot engineered “specifically for the smaller vessels used in Alaska’s salmon fisheries.”
Shinkei equips participating Alaska fishermen at no cost with its harvesting technology, purchasing their catch at a “premium,” as it works to scale its new seafood portfolio nationwide.
Alaska crews hand feed salmon they’ve caught into the robot, a tall metal box bolted to the deck, according to a more in-depth look at the technology from Fast Company. Inside, computer vision helps the machine identify the species and slaughter the fish in a cycle that takes about six seconds, depositing the fish in ice before it can thrash.
“We’re basically doing the equivalent of surgery on these fish in a very difficult maritime environment,” Shinkei’s Cofounder and CEO Saif Khawaja told the news outlet.
