After 75 years, the Western Flyer is back in Monterey as part of an art and education initiative.

The vessel is famous for chartering Nobel Peace Prize Winning Author John Steinbeck and his best friend, Marine Biologist Ed “Doc” Ricketts from Monterey to the Gulf of California on a marine science expedition.

The trip was documented in one of Steinbeck’s most famous works — and his only literary collaboration — Log From the Sea of Cortez, which has inspired countless marine scientists and helped further the study of ecology.

Hundreds of Steinbeck fans and curious visitors gathered at the Monterey Fisherman’s Wharf, Saturday, to welcome the Western Flyer’s return and take a tour of the boat.

“Of course I’m a fan. He [Steinbeck] appeals to everyone. He wrote for all classes and was a master at what he does,” Audry Lynch said as she watched as a parade of boats drove in as part of the celebration.
