A male Mekong Irrawaddy dolphin believed to be between 12 and 15 years old died after being caught in fishing gear in Cambodia’s Kandal province, the Fisheries Administration (FiA) confirmed.
The dolphin’s carcass was found on July 24, upstream from the Svay Chrum ferry crossing in Svay Chrum village, Svay commune, near Arey Ksat town.
The Kandal Fisheries Administration Cantonment identified the animal as individual number 18. It weighed 64 kilogrammes, measured 203 centimetres in length and was estimated to have been between 12 and 15 years old.
An autopsy determined that the dolphin died after becoming entangled in fishing lines and a net. Tissue samples were collected for further scientific analysis and research by the conservation team.
