More than 65,000 native trees planted, damaged habitats restored and local communities involved in conservation are helping transform Boeung Prek Lapouv Landscape Protected Area into a stronger and healthier wetland ecosystem.
The progress was highlighted during an evaluation meeting and field visit on July 17, where the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT) Cambodia reviewed six years of restoration work with government officials, local authorities and development partners.
Although the current project has ended, WWT Cambodia said the achievements represent “a new beginning” for protecting the 8,305-hectare wetland in Takeo province over the long term.
“Boeung Prek Lapouv is an important wetland where we have worked closely with the Ministry of Environment, local authorities and communities to restore habitats while supporting local livelihoods,” said Heang Sophal, Country Director of WWT Cambodia.
Since 2020, WWT Cambodia has planted more than 65,000 flooded forest seedlings from 10 native tree species across 80.6 hectares. More than 20,000 seedlings were planted over 30 hectares in 2026 alone. Many of the trees were grown in community nurseries, allowing local people to directly participate in restoring the ecosystem.
