National Park Service officials are offering anglers cash bonuses for catching brown trout in the Colorado River between Glen Canyon Dam and the Paria River as part of the Brown Trout Winter Bonanza program.

The invasive fish’s population has increased in recent years near Lees Ferry threatening downstream native fish species, which they feed on.

Brown trout are susceptible to being caught during the winter spawning season when they move to shallow gravel bars in the river.

Under the Park Service’s program, there’s no limit for catching the fish and they can be turned in during the month of December for payments ranging from $33 for each brown trout to $500 for the largest fish.
